Cosmetology
Program at a Glance
The cosmetology program is a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare high school students to pass the State of New Jersey Cosmetology/Hairstyling licensing examination and to obtain a career in the field of cosmetology. As an approved program by the New Jersey Department of Education, the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and Board of Cosmetology, students have the opportunity to earn college credits through Sussex County Community College articulation agreement.
Eligible students earn college credits and/or industry valued credential(s): NJ State Board of Cosmetology License; Cosmetologist/Hairstylist, and college credit.
What You Will Learn
This is a comprehensive program that requires students to apply knowledge of chemistry, anatomy and physical science. Students are trained to utilize fine motor skill with precision on practical applications of theory, and services on mannikins and live models. Students will learn the art of hairdressing, barbering, design, cutting, coloring, chemical services, fashion trends, makeup, manicuring, pedicuring, and skin care techniques.
During senior year, students must be in good academic standing in order to take the licensing exam and must accrue a minimum of 1000 hours as required by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology & Hairstyling to qualify for licensing.
Career Pathways
Graduates of the program have gone on to become hair stylists, barbers, salon managers, and salon proprietors. The beauty industry offers endless career possibilities and is continually growing. Students may also pursue careers related to sales, beauty influencers, image styling, and makeup artistry. Students may also pursue postsecondary education.
