Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we begin a new school year, we want to take a moment to share important information about benchmark assessments at Sussex County Technical School. Students will participate in benchmark assessments in English, Math, Science, and History each marking period.
What is a Benchmark Assessment?
A benchmark assessment is an independently written essay or task designed to reflect the essential learning objectives of a course. These assessments give teachers a clear picture of how well students are mastering key skills and content at different points in the school year. Students with IEPs or 504 plans will receive their documented accommodations to ensure equitable access and accurate measurement of their progress.
Benchmark assessments have been created by our administrators and teachers in alignment with SCTS Curriculum and Instruction. Creation and administration of Benchmarks are required by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) and serve several important purposes:
-
They provide teachers with valuable data on student learning and progress.
-
They may be used, in addition to state testing, to help determine academic placement levels.
-
They act as an indicator for students who may benefit from additional support or interventions.
-
They count as 5% of each student’s marking period grade.
Students must complete the benchmark in school, independently. If needed, students may be asked to stay after to make up any missing benchmarks. We appreciate your partnership in supporting your child’s learning. By keeping parents informed, we hope to strengthen the connection between school and home and ensure that students approach these assessments with confidence and purpose.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and school community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lisa Schneider
