• Program at a Glance
The Engineering Program is one of the most unique and challenging technology programs offered to high school students today. The course is truly "project driven" in that basic skills are taught through the completion of projects coupled with rigorous academics. As a result of this training, graduates are poised to succeed in obtaining their bachelor's degree in engineering at a four-year post-secondary school.

    What You Will Learn
Course content covers physical topics such as kinematics and motion, forces, energy, rotational motion, strength and materials, equilibrium (statics), fluid flow, harmonic motion and waves. During senior year, students will study various topics of electricity and magnetism including electric fields, Gauss’ Law, potential, capacitance, current, DC circuits, magnetic fields, Faraday’s Law, induction, AC circuits, and electromagnetic waves.  In addition, students are exposed to the world of modern 3-D computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools. Students learn to interact with the state-of-the-art CAD/CAM/CAE Suite of software products known as Siemens NX.  Students use this software to create tool paths for computer numeric controlled (CNC) mills and lathes. Students learn how to manufacture/prototype various mechanical parts and devices from raw materials like aluminum, titanium and stainless steel.  During junior year, students participate in at least one large group manufacturing project. In the past, this project has included designing and manufacturing a human-powered submarine to be raced in the International Submarine Races.

Sussex Tech is the only high school to fully design and manufacture a human-powered submarine and enter this elite competition with over 20 other major universities from around the world. During senior year, students select and complete a "senior project," which takes the entire year to complete. This project culminates with students entering their work in an external competition or presentation to an informed group outside the school.

    Career Pathways
Most graduates leave Sussex Tech to pursue Bachelors’ Degrees at colleges and universities throughout the United States. Armed with analytical and practical engineering design skills, the young engineering student can pursue challenging and rewarding work in any of the traditional areas of engineering which include Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, and Electrical Engineering.

With excellent academic performance, graduates from the Sussex Tech Engineering Program have been accepted to many of the top engineering post-secondary colleges and universities throughout the United States including Princeton, Cornell, The United States Military Academy (West Point), Rensselaer,  Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Drexel, Rutgers, Rochester Institute of Technology, Penn State, Lehigh, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Villanova, University of Southern California, and Georgia Tech.

Feedback from our engineering graduates has shown that they are consistently better prepared for the rigorous academic challenges at their selected post-secondary schools than their peers from traditional high schools, as evidenced by their excellent grades and perseverance to complete their degrees in engineering. Current articulation agreements are in place with NJIT, Sussex County Community College, and County College of Morris allowing eligible engineering majors to earn up to  16 college credits during their high school years.    Please see your guidance counselor for details.
